Alan Savory & the African Connection

One person who has already developed a fairly sophisticated system of land-management decision-making, at least for the larger ranches and rangelands--where in fact it will make the greatest difference--is one Alan Savory.

I have heard him speak once at the local university sometime in the late 80’s or early 90’s, and was impressed (and agreed largely) with the perceptions he had gained from his own hands-on experience in South Africa and elsewhere.

The African Connection is more appropriate to our situation here in North America (including California) than you might think. LIke that of much of Africa, the flora of lowland California evolved and adapted within a context of a mammalian “megafauna,” and that only yesterday in geologic terms.

If there is anything “new” to Savory and his followers in this little essay, I hope it can be incorporated into their system as another factor--or set of factors--to consider.
