Adios...

Some big changes in a little time (1950-2000)

  • Adios to Main Street, CA
  • Adios to volunteer fire crews
  • Adios cheap to reasonable medical care, family general practitioners who make house calls for a pittance
  • Adios small rural towns with a real sense of community, or even big-city neighborhoods with same
  • Adios above all to ample open space around homes and towns, and to the sense of physical freedom it gave
  • Adios many other kinds of freedom, like burning trash in the backyard without permits, being in possession of “wildlife,” dead or alive, no matter how good the reason, without permits, or doing all sorts of other things without permits or some other sort of restriction, regulation, red tape
  • Adios to chickens (or other sorts of livestock) in the backyard
  • Adios to real vegetable gardens
  • Adios to small family farms, orchards, dairies
  • Adios to small-to-modest-size houses on modest-to-large-size lots
  • Adios to tank houses, barns, chicken houses, corrals
  • Adios to Soquel without a single traffic light
  • Adios to “civic pride”?
  • Adios to neighborliness? thrift? craftsmanship? integrity?
  • Adios to dusty old real funky feed stores that actually sell feed not frou-frou pet supplies
  • Adios to mom and pop corner grocery stores, mom and pop everything
